Decemer 12 2011: New clipless age restriction at Cycling BC
December 9, 2011 By CycleAdmin

New for 2012: Age restriction on clipless pedals for athletes 9 & Under (U9)

Cycling BC has proposed and the BMX commission has approved the setting the age at which riders are permitted to race with clipless pedals at 10 (born in 2003 or later), until this age all riders must race on pedals with no foot retention system. It is felt that the introduction of this rule will help all young riders develop proper riding skills and make racing in the younger classes more competitive.  Riders that start using clips too early, in order to be competitive with other clipped in riders, often do not develop correct technique for executing skills fundamental to racing. By establishing a minimum age for clipping in, no riders in the younger classes will be compelled to move to clipping in by competitive pressures and the overall level of competition should be improved.

All skills can be learned, executed and practiced on flat pedals. Keep in mind children concerned that they will no longer be able to jump or manual, or feel that their feet will slip off the pedals unless clipped are merely providing evidence that they have an issue with their technique that is being masked by being attached to their bike. They should be able to execute these skills regardless of pedal choice.

For the past three seasons our youth and junior development camps have been run with athletes on flat pedals.  The main goal behind this is to have athletes learn the fundamental skills on flat pedals first.   “The implementation of flat pedals at the development camps has definitely been a success. It took the kids about all of half an hour to get used to it and after that there wasn’t a complaint all year. Also, from a coaching standpoint it enables me to teach the athletes proper skills and techniques that are the foundation of becoming a successful rider, not just at their current age and ability but for the rest of their career as an athlete in BMX” – Mischa Partridge, Youth Development Coach.

Currently Alberta (U9) and Quebec (U12) have similar age restrictions.  Several other countries including most of Europe have a similar age restriction of U12 or higher.

Our goal is assist athletes in developing skills properly, thus making them better and more complete athletes in the future.  We understand that will be a learning curve involved with the changes and will be flexible to accommodate everyone in the changes.

CANADIAN BMX RIDERS TO BENEFIT FROM WORLD-CLASS SUPER CROSS COURSE IN ABBOTSFORD
Course to be built to UCI World Cup standards

(Ottawa, ON – April 28, 2011) The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) has entered into a unique partnership with B2ten, CyclingBC, the Abbotsford BMX Club, the City of Abbotsford and the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific to build a World class permanent BMX Super Cross course meeting International standards in Abbotsford, BC.

The track will be cutting edge, becoming the first Super Cross (SX) track in Canada where top BMX riders will be able to compete and train for upcoming World Cup events, World Championships and Olympic Games.

Tory Nyhaug, Canada’s up-and-coming BMX star and multiple age group UCI World Champion, is thrilled about this new venture. “I'm excited that we are getting a world class track to train on.  This is critical for World Cup preparations, especially with the Olympic Games right around the corner."

“We are pleased that the stakeholders have come together to form this agreement,” said Greg Mathieu, CEO and Secretary General of the Canadian Cycling Association. “This is a significant milestone for cycling in Canada and for the sport of BMX.  Currently there is no place in Canada for our BMX athletes to train Super Cross efficiently. With this new partnership and facility, we will now be able to inspire future champions.”

The start area of the track – one of the most important aspects of a race – will be built according to Olympic standards. The construction of the track and all of its features, set to begin imminently, is scheduled to be completed before the UCI Class 4 & 5 events being held on June 4-5, 2011 in Abbotsford, BC.

The $130,000 cost of the project was substantially underwritten by B2ten along with the Canadian Sport Centre Pacific and the Abbotsford BMX Cycling Club.

The Abbotsford BMX Cycling Club will be responsible to build, maintain and operate the track for the next 20 years, as well as hosting international events, such as World Cups, in collaboration with CyclingBC and the CCA. The City of Abbotsford will provide track access to the club.

“This is a fantastic step forward for BMX in Canada. Abbotsford BMX and the entire Province of British Columbia is proud to have this opportunity to participate in the creation of world-class athletes, and  the facilities to underpin their efforts,” said Steve Baxter, president of the Abbotsford BMX Club.

October 10 2010: ABA Canadian Grands sets new record

Record turnout @ Canadian Grands & National Champions Crowned!!!
by ABA Staff

The JBL, Intense, FLY Racing and Tangent sponsored 2010 Canadian Nationals Series took place this weekend, with the series ending at the Canadian Grand Nationals in Chilliwack, BC. The 2010 Canadian Nationals Series saw a record turnout with 106 motos for Sunday`s race and 108 for Saturday.

Of course, the focus this weekend was the Canadian National Champions. Who would handle the pressure and win the #1 plate and the cups?

It started with the Girl Pro ranks, as Supercross rider Kaila Sweeney defended her title to retain the #1 plate. In the Pro chase, it was Redline`s rider Tory Nyhaug that came into the weekend with the points lead and, despite not being 100% recovered, Tory had enough in the tank to win both days and take home the title. Congrats to both Kaila & Tory on a dominant season. The only thing these riders need practice on is opening the champagne bottles and spraying the other riders on the podium!!!

In the Girls category, Natalie Schmidt for XMB kept the #1 plate on her bars and nearly captured the title in Girls Cruiser as well. But, in addition to performing under pressure, you`ve got to beat the most riders to gain the points needed for #1. In the Girl Cruisers, that was Ozone`s Laura Knowles in the 36-40 Girls Cruiser class that had the count needed.

The Cruiser class was a nailbiter, as Ian Knopf for Extreme Team grabbed the points lead early, but then had to sit back and watch Gerry Erickson & Greg "The Thrill" McGill in the older Cruiser ranks. Those riders would come up just a bit short after having phenomenal seasons and the title went to the 11 year old from Vernon! In the Amateur chase, the points lead coming into the race was big and favored former World #1 rider Parker Simpson. The Ozone rider was on fire all weekend, but a crash in the first turn would ruin his hopes of a first title. Parker certainly has a National Championship in his future, but he would have to watch his teammate Matt McCormack bring home the cup to Team Ozone.

In the team categories, it was Wrecking Crew bringing home the title in the Trophy category, while Ozone grabbed the top honors in the Bike Shop division.

Congratulations to the 2010 Canadian National Champions & to all riders that were a part of some of the best racing this staff has ever seen!!!

If this sounds to good to be true, check out the footage on www.factionbikeco.com where you'll also find some of the physics info behind why the mid-size wheels have such an influence on a BMX's performance. Just when you thought you needed less weight to go higher and faster, along comes a new concept and rips up the rule book, by showing bigger is actually better.
FactionBikeCo is a small, UK rider-owned company making limited numbers of the new bikes, there's no marketing department and rely on riders to send in the clips and photos. The site has only just gone online, more clips showing the bikes performance will be added as soon as they get the footage back from the USA riders.

For 'normal' use the bike looks better-proportioned for adult riders than conventional 20" wheel bikes, so you don't get heckled in the street.

There's an interview with Keith from FactionBikeCo at this link:  http://wideopenmag.co.uk/news/3197/faction-bike-co-the-22-bmx-project-video-interview

News from a new UK bike company FactionBikeCo.....

The new 22" wheel bikes are continuing to stir things up - already popular with experienced riders and owned by some of the best known BMX legends, the new size bikes are now winning races and helping riders do some of the biggest airs they've ever done.
November 9 2009: 22" wheel bikes win races AND help you do bigger airs

The project recently received approval to move forward from the Abbotsford Parks Recreation & Culture Commission maintaining the City of Abbotsford’s ongoing commitment to the sport of BMX. The new track will also be the cornerstone of a bid to host a World Cup Super Cross event within the next two years. A world cup event will bring competitors to Abbotsford from around the world and enhance the City of Abbotsford’s position as Sport Town Canada

The existing Abbotsford BMX track has already received substantial upgrades over the past two years. In 2007 the track was re-designed to International BMX standards and the corners were upgraded from dirt to asphalt in 2008.  The new Supercross upgrade will include a taller and steeper start hill similar to that used at the Beijing Olympics and a Supercross straight leading to the first corner.  The existing “pro sections” of the course will be upgraded to international Supercross standards to complete the improvements.

Once constructed, the track will provide a Supercross track for local riders and function as a training facility for current and future Olympians. The new track is scheduled for completion prior to May 22nd, 2010 when Abbotsford BMX will host an International Classic race.

Fundraising for the facility is ongoing and the development group is keen to secure corporate support for the new track.  Individuals and corporations interested in donating funds, products or services to the project or interested in sponsoring this new and exciting sports venue should contact:

September 24 2009: Shimano DXR Hub review
Last year when I was building my bike up I wanted to have a top of the line wheel set. With Shimano releasing their DXR line the previous year I settled on a set of DXR hubs. The rear hub is based off a 2007 Shimano XTR hub, only with a smaller cassette body. It has 4 internal pawls with 10 degrees of engagement, just enough pawls for a quick engagement but not applying any drag to the hub.
The first thing I noticed was the engagement points in the gate. I could find my “sweet spot” quickly without having to spin my wheel in the gate to get ready. The second thing was how quite these hubs were. They didn’t have that loud buzz that has become so prevalent in today’s BMX hubs. The last thing was that lack of drag, these hubs spin forever! These hubs are definitetly built for racing.
So when a company builds a race component the biggest hurdle is always weight. We as racers want the lightest parts that will last a race season or more. The problem is when you reduce weight you often compromise something else, usually durability or performance. Shimano spec’d a hollow aluminum axle with their hubs, advertised to be built for their Olympic athletes I trusted their durability seeing as most UCI tracks include the largest jumps in BMX to date. In a 4 month time period I broke 3 axles. Shimano sent new axles every time at no charge, but it was not an easy process. I eventually had to have a hollow cromo axle machined as it was cheaper than getting new hubs. After many conversations with Shimano regarding this problem, they are aware of the problem and will be offering hollow cromo axles with their new hubs for 2010. The other problem I have with these hubs is they need constant attention, the cones often come loose and need to be tightened. This can also be contributed to the broken axle problem, because as the cones loosen it puts more stress on the axle.
Would I recommend these hubs to someone? Yes and No, You need to ask yourself some questions like “how smooth am I”, “do I jump” and “how much maintenance do I want to perform through the season”. You should be able to make a conscious decision based on your answers.
Until next time keep the rubber side down!

In comparison to the $85 I paid for a  Maxxis MTB tire, it isn't so bad, but compared to other BMX race tires it is hard to swallow. I would like to believe you get what you pay for though. With all that being said, I am very happy with my decision, and we will see how they do with different track conditions as the season closes.

Till then, keep the rubber side down!

The first thing I noticed was the diameter, The DTH is about 1/2" smaller than the micro knobbies. 2nd was the tread. Many tires rely on knobs or tread blocks that extrude from the tire. The DTH is exactly the opposite. The DTH has a smooth surface with grooves into the tire. This creates a smoother surface with less rolling resistance. So with that said the first thing I felt riding the DTH was in fact how fast they were. The second thing was definitely the drop in my roll-out, relating to the reduction in the overall diameter of the tire. The DTH held every line I pushed them into. Corners were a breeze, and they felt solid on landings. I do have 2 gripes about these tires. First, the lact of "knobs" had an impact on gate starts. This could have been due to the gate not being swept, but I had one burn out in the gate after leaving a little early.  Second is price. At $47.99 cdn they are a bit expensive.
In a quest to replace my worn out Micro Knobbies, I started a search for my new tires.
After Kicking the can over a couple different types of tires I finally decided on the Maxxis DTH 24x1.75.

July 28 2009 :McCormack and Simpson bring home podium finishes.

Only, three of us from last year’s race made the final eight this year.  I was happy to have just made it into the final eight this year, finishing third in that group was just icing on the cake”, remarked the 16-year-old RSS student.

“It was a long day for Connor, with every race being tougher than the last”, says Chris McCormack, (Connor’s Father & Canada’s Challenge Team Manager).  “He, (Connor), had to ride 6 qualifying rounds to make it to the final round in the top eight, and he fought hard to earn that bronze medal”, remarked McCormack.

Prior to attending the World event this year, Connor easily took the Canadian Cycling Association, National title in Kingston, Ontario in mid-June, then went onto take first place both days in his age category at the ABA Canadian National Series races held in Vernon at the end of June.  Then it was off to Roseville, California, Reno, Nevada, and Salt Lake City, Utah for more racing and training in preparation for the world event.

Eleven year old Parker Simson, who finished second at the 08 Worlds in China, captured two firsts at the National Series in Vernon and in Salt Lake City, also competed at the World event in Adelaide, Australia.  Simpson rode five rounds in Australia to qualify for the final main event.  “Parker fought a hard fight coming from behind off the start gate to move into second spot down the second straight in the final round,” says Team Manager, Chris McCormack.  “While trying to take over the rider in first spot, Parker made a daring move in the second corner, and went down.  He got back up on his bike and finished in seventh position overall,” says McCormack.

For the second year in a row, Connor McCormack of the Kelowna BMX Club is the top performing Canadian at the World Championships of BMX racing held in Adelaide, Australia last week.
McCormack took home the gold medal at last year’s World championships in China.  “This year in Adelaide was a different story from China.  Last year, I had 23 riders in my age category.  This year, there were 74 riders, with some very stiff competition from the States, Brazil, New Zealand, and Australia.

08-12-16 ABA Canadian National Dates Announced!
The I's were dotted and the T's crossed last Thursday on a new lease in Victoria, BC.
Victoria BMX, sanctioned by the ABA, will take over the track and facilities that were used for the UCI World Championships of 2007.

It is good to know that fantastic track and facility will be used.
It was sad to see such an awesome (the World's) track grown over with weeds.

In the latest issue of BMXer Magazine there is a picture and caption of Airdrie's own Dayton Peterson getting airborne at the above mentioned race in Victoria.
The issue before this current one also included a picture and caption of Alex Sailer.

BMXer is a great mag and one of only a couple that are dedicated to BMX Racing.

From Shawn Loewen, President of Edmonton BMX:

"The Edmonton City Council voted unanimously in favour of building our new BMX facility on the John Fry site and funding $200,000 towards it."

Sounds like Edmonton will have an awesome new facility. For those not familiar, the John Fry site is farther on the south side of Edmonton, (nicer for those of us coming from the south), and I understand it will include a TON of parking. I hear that Tom Ritz(enthaler) makes a mean track - Abby, Victoria, Beijing, I wonder if he would come to Alberta, I hear that he will.

Edmonton BMX is moving because they have been subleasing from the Velodrome group for years and now the roadies are kickin' em out so they can build a cover over their velodrome.

Submitted by Terry Lipovski

Congrats to Rami and the gang at the Thunder Bay BMX Association for becoming Ontario's second ABA BMX Track. Their Executive will be headed for full training to ensure their track runs like clockwork. This is awesome news for BMX in Ontario and we wish them the best.

Stay tuned for more news about ABA's growth in Ontario too! Can't wait to get the Battle of Ontario in full swing soon.....

Jim Brown is officially AA Pro.

This makes Jim only the 5th in Canadian history (behind ontario's Bob Rowley, Airdrie BMX's Ken Cools, old schooler's Jack Hutton and Pete Zablotny) to acheive this.

So next time you see "The Hardest Working Rider in BMX" be sure to give him a Congratulations!!!!

Cycling Manitoba is hard at work on the single biggest project that they have ever undertaken.
BMX racing is now an Olympic sport and they want to bring racing back to the city.
They are building a mutli - use cycling facility in Buhler Park. The park will consist of a dual run BMX racing track, dirt jump park, trials course and BMX pump track. The dirt jump area will also be converted for snowboard and ski use in the winter.
